Guerrilla Trees
With the rate of deforestation increasing daily we have undertaken to initiate a tree growing programme with a multi prong approach.
One aspect of this project concentrates on the cultivation of native emergant forest species, as it is these very species which were hit hardest by the logging industries. To do this we have been sourcing seed from various urban and rural environments where the remaining mature trees are to be found easily.
In particular we are concentrating on those species which were once popular for boat construction. Hoop Pine Kauri Bunya Pine Blue Quandong White Cedar White Beech to name a few. This is to both replenish rare timbers and to act as a carbon sink for the timber we will require in the re-fit of Armageddon Ready.
In conjunction with this we will be looking to establish a youth involvement plan where families are trained to recognize and collect valuable seed stocks and either bring them in to be cultivated in our nursery or grow them with their children at home. tAs the trees become ready to be planted out weekends at the reforestation properties could be organized so they can plant them in their final location.
Another aspect is our desire to replace invasive exotic species in the urban environment with native trees which are food species for not only the local fauna but often for us humans too. We do not believe in just removing these trees, some of which are often quite old, and of significance to the local community. We want to provide people with the chance to purchace a Guerrilla Tree pack, which containes a native strangler fig which can be mailed out. The recipient can then attach the Fig to the invasive tree and watch over time as the native slowly replaces the invasive enventually killing it.
